Park City

The town of Park City has three resorts in close proximity: Park City Mountain Resort; Deer Valley resort; and The Canyons. All three ski resorts are accessible using the TRIP pass with a combined skiable terrain of 3,500 hectares. Home to the 2002 Winter Olympics, the ski areainfrastructure is modern and well planned with many recent improvements to lift systems. The actual ski resort of Park City – Park City Mountain Resort – has fantastic skiing, and the town and area have plenty of activities to entertain non-skiers.

Park City, Utah, is 45 minutes from the Salt Lake City international airport which is serviced by many daily scheduled flights. Ground transportation companies operate various regular transfers from the airport to Park City. There is a free bus system that aids transportation around the town and across the three resorts. The resorts of Snowbird, Alta and Solitude are also not too far away and worthy of a day trip. For those without a car, tour operators such as Lewis Brothers provide transportation to these resorts.

The following is a guide to distances of other resorts (and Salt Lake City) from Park City:
• Salt Lake City – 51km
Deer Valley – 3km
The Canyons – 3km
Alta - 62km
Snowbird – 38km
Solitude – 40km
Powder Mountain – 80km

Park City Mountain Resort has a large ski area of 1,335 hectares, with terrain for all ability levels although much of it is steep. The terrain includes wide open groomed runs and a claim to fame for the resort is that it is the official training site of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard teams. Park City has four award winning terrain parks and the mountain boasts the largest superpipe in the country. Conveniently, the mountain has a chairlift from the heart of Park City’s Main Street, and a new lift has improved access from the base area up to the main skiing areas.

Park City itself is also well developed, and Main Street is lined with shops, galleries, bars and bistros. Despite misconceived rumours that Utah is a dry state, the nightlife is happening. The town has a wide range of accommodation varying from luxury hotels to more affordable accommodation.

Unless you want to specifically go the Sundance Film Festival, avoid Park City like the plague during this time, as accommodation prices will be at an absolute premium and the slopes will be incredibly crowded.

More information will be available soon. The Powderhounds will be visiting Park City in early 2009 to check out this famous Utah ski destination, and provide the low-down on the skiing terrain, accommodation, and bars and restaurants.
