Norquay

Norquay (pronounced Nork-way, not Norkee) is a very small, yet steep resort near the township of Banff. With only four chairlifts, it has a nice cosy atmosphere and is easy to navigate, which can have associated benefits for families. Skiers and snowboarders will enjoy majestic views across the township of Banff and the surrounding mountains. Norquay is worth visiting for a day or two, so long as you keep your expectations under control.

Norquay is one of three Banff ski resorts which can be accessed off an interchangeable lift ticket. Norquay is the ski hill most local to the township of Banff, and is only a ten minute drive away. There’s no on-mountain accommodation at Norquay so the best play to stay is in Banff. If you don’t have a car, you can get to the ski hill via complimentary shuttle buses from various Banff hotels.

There is terrain to suit all levels. A magic carpet provides access to gentle beginner runs. Good quality grooming on intermediate and black runs also provides for some high speed cruising. With 44 percent of runs being black or double black, there’s plenty to challenge experts. The double chair services some difficult steep terrain that is generally covered with huge moguls.

Snowmaking is used to make up for the lack of natural snowfall. With an annual average of only 3 metres of snowfall and infrequent powder days, this is not a resort for powderhounds. Norquay has a reputation for having icy slopes, and this was certainly the first thing we noticed about the place. The plus-side is that this is great if you want to practise your racing.

Other pros of Norquay are the relatively cheap snowschool lessons, and that lift tickets are sold by the hour. So if you just want to go for a quickie whilst your wife (or husband) is shopping, Norquay is the place to go.
